Van Staal‘s new VR-series spinning reels feature a fully machined aluminum body with a sealed waterproof drag system, spiral-bevel drive gear and pinion, and a titanium-coated center shaft. (Included with each reel is a custom kit that allows you to convert to a bailless setup.) VR reels are available in four sizes for 20- to 40-pound braid, and feature a 4.8-to-1 gear ratio. Weighing 15.8 to 17 ounces, they cost $499 to $589.
