Smart business people actually put _more _time and treasure into new products and marketing during hard economic times. The very sharp Whaler decision makers did just that by creating a totally new 28-footer with an amazing list of innovations! For example, the 280 – in the Outrage center-console line – offers the only through-stem integral anchoring system among 28-footers, and it comes with a recessed windlass in the foredeck.

Taking a feature from its award-winning 23 Outrage, the 280 sports a console cooler with a cushion and backrest that hides in the foredeck to please those who prefer sun worship to fishing. Another comfort feature   a removable cockpit table with a special storage rack – is found inside the center console. The hardtop’s support legs blend into a wraparound enclosure with a full windshield, electric windshield vent and a wiper. And the console boasts dual-level footrests, a storage compartment with 12-volt outlets and an MP3-player jack. The helm station also cradles the driver and a companion in a pair of bucket seats with folding center and side armrests as well as thigh support bolsters that flip up to form a leaning post.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Whaler without a load of fishing amenities as well as unsinkability. The bow platform conceals lockable storage for three rod/reel combos on each side; another belowdecks dry box provides molded storage spots for a pair of 5-gallon buckets for stowing cast nets and the like.

In addition to Whaler’s signature foldaway transom seat, the 280 sports new aft-facing, foldaway seats amidships – ideal for watching your trolling spread. At the aft end of the stainless-steel toe rails in the cockpit, Whaler installs four holders for downrigger balls. All totaled, you get a whopping 18 rod holders in the gunwales, across the transom and on the hardtop. And all this still only scratches the surface of Whaler’s 280 Outrage innovations.
