What is likely the first-ever video of a living oarfish in its mesopelagic (open, deepwater) habitat was shot recently in the depths of the Gulf of Mexico. Among the longest of fishes, oarfish are rarely seen, most often when they have inexplicably beached themselves or have wash up dead on a beach. This amazing footage shows an elegant “sea serpent” estimated at 15 to 30 feet in length.
