Susceptible to cold-temperature snaps, common snook flourish in warmer, tropical waters from Florida through the Caribbean side of Central America and along a portion of South America’s Atlantic coast. A Pacific version—called the black snook—is found from Baja to Colombia. Both can grow to about 50 pounds.

In Florida, snook spawn in the inlets each summer, and they are protected from harvest during that time as well as during the coldest parts of winter. Anglers target them at different times along mangrove shorelines, along the beach and at structures such as bridges. They often lay with their mouths into the current waiting for prey to pass with the tides.
