Ten miles of island, surrounded by a million options. Marathon is the Florida Keys’ middle child, roughly halfway between Key Largo and Key West, a place where anglers can pick their pursuit. But bonefish weren’t built for all that human interaction, and the impact of poor catch and release practices was increasing mortality rates. What the bones needed was an awareness campaign – and a catchphrase – to promote better handling. Save the Slime was born. Named for the protective mucus that coats the bonefish’s body, Save the Slime kicked off in 2022. The campaign’s impact isn’t measured in clicks, likes or impressions, but in the numbers of healthy, aging fish.
