Baitfish to Blue Marlin – Key West

Florida Keys Sustainability Status Report

Welcome to Key West. This seven-square-mile island is home to some of the best and most varied fishing in the world. From mahi to marlin, snapper to sailfish, jack crevalle to cobia. These species, and hundreds of others, are the focus of the International Game Fish Association. Along with tracking world records and advocating for ethical angling practices, conservation is one of the IGFA’s main pillars.

The IGFA has two initiatives making a positive impact on the Keys. The first is improving forage fish management, an effort that began in 2016. The second is protecting the Western Dry Rocks, one of the most critical spawning sites in the Keys. This initiative began in 2021, aiming to create long-term benefits for the entire region. From spawning to feeding to sustainable fishing practices, the IGFA is there at every stage of the life cycle.
