NOAA and the Sportfishing Conservancy kicked off a summer-long contest — the Sanctuary Classic — with special events held Saturday in Florida and California. From now through September 3, kids can register online and submit their fishing photos each week, taken from any of the country’s national marine sanctuaries.

Highlighted sanctuaries include the Monterey Bay and Channel Islands locations in California and the Florida Keys and Gray’s Reef locations in Florida and Georgia, respectively.

Online voting determines each week’s winners. The top 10 receive $100 awards. At the end of the summer, the kids whose photos place in the top four overall win $1,000 scholarships.

Entry is free and open to youngsters under 18; catch-and-release is encouraged. Participants receive information on the sanctuaries, safety, conservation and sustainable recreational-fishing techniques.
