Some custom builders hire outside guns to design their hulls. Patrick Harrison both designs and builds the beautiful custom vessels that come out of his shop. And from the looks and profile of this vest-pocket fisherman, you can’t mistake its heritage.

The 28 features classic Oregon Inlet/Carolina-styling elements such as a broken sheer line, dramatically flared bow and a proven bottom. This provides both an excellent sea boat and a stable fishing platform that delivers a soft ride.

The efficient running surface requires far less horsepower and uses far less fuel than many production deep-V hulls. This new 28-footer reaches speeds in the 45 mph range with a single 300 hp outboard, though it’s rated for a maximum of twin 250s. Harrison insists that kind of power isn’t necessary, however. The vessel planes at relatively low rpm and cruises very economically at almost 35 mph.

Harrison says his goal was to create a center-console with typical Carolina styling that has a high-end finish and great sea-keeping capabilities, can troll all day in rough seas without the white-knuckle effect and can go moderately fast without requiring two or three outboards that guzzle fuel.

Harrison cold-molds his boats and then encapsulates them with fiberglass. The 28 features a retractable upper control station, recessed cleats, a teak helm pod with single-lever controls, a hydraulic jack plate, teak swim platforms, a stainless-steel-lined transom fish box that doubles as a livewell, a leaning post with drink box and loads of tackle storage, a V-berth, electric head and teak covering boards.
