Captain Releases His 30,000th Billfish

Guatemala Skipper Brad Phillipps has just racked up an astounding career total of 30,000 billfish released.

Setting an amazing milestone, Capt. Brad Phillipps recently released the 30,000th billfish of his 20-year career as a full-time big-game captain. Fittingly, Phillipps’ 7-year-old son caught the sailfish that established this record off Guatemala on November 28. Phillipps has fished many of the world’s hottest billfish locations, but for the past 16 years has focused on Guatemala’s Pacific coast. He operates a 40-foot game-fish boat, Decisive, and his charter business, Guatemalan Billfishing Adventures. The 44-year-old skipper, born in South Africa, counts more than 1,000 blue marlin releases in his career total, including an estimated 1,254-pounder off Cape Verde. Phillipps has won The Billfish Foundation’s Release Captain of the Year 16 of the past 17 years.
