Amazing best describes today’s trip. The morning was like a painting as the sun was rising while the moon was setting. Captain Steven was first on the giant Drum Flats at 7 am and while sipping coffee the Drum appeared like magic not 100 feet away from where I had them yesterday.

Captain Steven’s anglers all want a shot at catching a 50 pound Drum on light tackle. Sight casting to hundreds of Drum tailing in 3’ feet of water is an amazing sight. The Tower on my Pathfinder is an ideal platform watching for the giant tails of the big push of water signaling the school.

There back! Giant Drum have arrived in lower Tampa Bay. This annual ritual will continue for the next 4 - 6 weeks. Giant drum 35-50 pounds can be found tailing in 2-3 feet of water, schools of 50 to 100 is common.

Let’s not forget it’s still winter as evidenced with this mornings 40 degrees temps combined with a stiff north wind. Remember dressing in layers is key as once the boat gets on plane the wind chill kicks in. I put curtains on my tower last winter and its days like this that you really apprecia ...

Pea soup fog and a light drizzle greeted Captain Steven on today’s scouting trip. I originally planned on running across Tampa Bay to Bishops Harbor but the fog ended that so I stayed close to O’Neill’s Marina looking for new hot spots.
