Walker's Cay Returns?

Bahamas island may be purchased by October

In Sport Fishing's May 2009 issue, we wrote about visiting the fish-rich waters off Walker's Cay in the Bahamas. Walker's, which once hosted a premier fishing and diving resort, closed in 2004 after back-to-back hurricanes. With little infrastructure on nearby islands, most anglers stopped making the 100-mile trek, save those few who found lodging on Big Grand and Little Grand cays.

At press time for the 2009 article, a contract for Walker's purchase had just fallen through; however, last week, news emerged that Walker's just may - finally - have a buyer.

AlphaCRE, an Atlanta, Georgia, land acquisition and commercial real estate firm, announced that the Bahamas Investment Authority (BIA) has endorsed the Oct. 26 purchase and subsequent redevelopment of Walker's Cay, a 69-acre island in the Bahamas' Abacos chain.

Offshore developer Victoria House, IBC, a Turks and Caicos company, submitted a redevelopment proposal at an undisclosed purchase price to the BIA. Initial plans approved include two hotels with 100 rooms and a five-diamond resort spa, 26 bluff lots, 18 half-acre beachfront properties for cottages, 28 condos above a retail boardwalk and office space, 48 dry-storage slips, 258 wet slips for vessels to 150 feet, yacht club with store, fuel and restaurant, 2,800-foot runway, and on-island customs and immigration.
