Seven Great Topwater Spots

Top fishing spots both near and far for anglers that want to pop 'til they drop

Northern Gulf off Alabama

What may well be the world's wildest action for red drum is a winter event along the shores of the northernmost Gulf of Mexico off Alabama. Having been there/done that, I can attest to the lasting memories left by watching dozens of 20- to 40pound bull reds simultaneously charging a big popper. I took the hooks off an 8inch popper: After casting it for an hour or so, their relentless, mauling attacks left no paint and only some of the primer beneath. Look for cold weather with light to moderate northerlies after strong winter fronts pass through when nearshore waters remain calm in the offshore winds. That seems to be when the reds are most active. Either de-barb trebles completely if you must use them, or swap 'em for a single hook.
