Winter Ways
This process creates higher visibility in deeper water and causes the lure to hang lower
Nov 27, 2007

If you'd like to try using a jointed or broken-back lure this winter for better hookups with trout, but you can't seem to get the lure to run deep enough or attract enough attention, make this alteration.

1. Remove the original lightweight hooks and split rings from the lure. (I use lures that weigh 1/4 ounce and measure about 4 1/2 inches long.)
2. Sand down the lure to its original finish with 120-grit sandpaper.
3. Dip lure in white base coat and allow to dry. (I use vinyl lure and jig finishes from Cabela's.)
4. Dip lure in fluorescent paint (two coats).
5. After paint dries, apply adhesive fish eyes and follow with two coats of clear lure and jig sealant.
6. Replace original split rings with heavier No. 4 split rings. Attach No. 2 Eagle Claw treble hooks in front and Mustad heavy-duty treble hooks in back.

This process creates higher visibility in deeper water and causes the lure to hang lower in back and swim deeper to reach lunker reds and trout.
