Sometimes the bite comes fast and furious, and success depends on how quickly you can re-rig. That was especially true in the Lower Chesapeake Bay last December, when a good day of  fishing meant 80 to 100 stripers. On one trip, first mate Larry Wilson was grabbing for leader off spools that were rolling everywhere. We caught plenty of stripers, but it was chaotic. During the February downtime, I vowed to come up with a better way to control all that line. Here's my rig:
 
Cut a piece of PVC pipe that's slightly larger in diameter than the spools of leader material you'll use and long enough to hold four spools. (Cutting the ends of the pipe at angles makes the whole thing easier to mount.)
 
In the side of the pipe, drill four holes for line to feed out from each spool. Near each end of the pipe, drill a hole large enough to insert a 1-inch stainless-steel screw. These screws keep the spools properly positioned and prevent them from falling out of the pipe, but can easily be removed to change spools.
 
On the outside of the PVC, label the pound-test of the line with a marker. Place the pipe on your boat where it's handiest for you. I mounted mine with screws to the back of my leaning post. You can also fasten a strap on the pipe to hold a pair of scissors.
