Masters of Metal
Sport Fishing convenes an international jigging symposium - and takes notes!
Sep 23, 2008
By Doug Olander (More articles by this author)

I invited three experts from three continents for an international jigging symposium in one of the world's better spots, the Pacific coast of Panama. Gustin's mothership provided an ideal platform, based off Coiba Island and very close to Hannibal Bank, Montuosa Island and other hot spots, with its big center consoles run by experienced, jig-friendly crews.

Even though the weather gods didn't see fit to give us much of a window during that time, these masters of metal did their work and proved their skill despite the conditions.

If you're looking for some magic formula that guarantees jigging success, you won't find it here or anywhere else. As with many techniques, and particularly this one, the pros consistently outfish also-rans because they pay attention to detail in gear, apply nuance in technique, and demonstrate both confidence and persistence in execution.

Lessons From Japan
With a characteristic bandana covering his head, Hideyuki Kitamura resembles a tall, grizzled and grinning Asian pirate more than a pro angler. But when he picks up a rod and reel, a passion for the sport of jigging becomes evident in the unassuming Japanese angler who prefers to be known simply as Yuki.
