Pursuing dolphin, tuna and sailfish on light line has become my passion in recent years. Trolling normal-size baits would quickly snap 2- and 4-pound monofilament, making bait-and-switch with teasers the logical choice. However, game fish don't always fall for such tactics.
When fish get selective, I've found that a saltwater fly used as a trolling lure often results in solid hookups on light line. I rig up by tying a Bimini twist in the main line and attaching a small ball-bearing snap swivel; my leader consists of three feet of 20-pound mono with a perfection loop at one end and a fly at the other. Deceivers and anchovy imitations work well, but I prefer Silicone Hardbody flies available from Offshore Angler.
It's amazing how many fish will pass up larger lures and teasers in favor of the 3-inch flies trolled at 4 to 7 knots, 50 yards back of the transom.
