Tightening Secret

Lube your line with a dab of petroleum jelly.

While tying tarpon leaders several years ago, I was doubling the class tippet (16-pound Mason) and connecting it to 100-pound Jinkai or Ande with an improved blood knot. Compared to all the half-hitches required by the Huffnagle, this knot offered a cleaner appearance and smaller size, but it was a frustrating devil to tie. One-third of my knots wouldn't tighten satisfactorily, despite being lubricated with saliva.
In search of a better lubricating system, I put vegetable oil in an empty Visine bottle, applied a few drops to the knot and voil`! I had the proper lubrication to fully tighten any knot with one sharp pull.
