When cutting off lures, I do so at least 6 or 8 inches above the knot. While I hate "wasting" leader material, this process serves three important purposes: It signals the need to sharpen hooks on that particular lure before storing it, enables tying off the end to hand scales to test knots at home and keeps the leader absolutely fresh by forcing me to re-tie frequently, especially when fish are biting.
