Tape Me to Your Leader

I keep my leaders looped using the plastic spiral wrap designed to gather electrical wiring into manageable bundles.

Heavy monofilament leaders have minds of their own: Keeping them properly coiled when not in use is always a challenge. The most common remedies for controlling coils include thick rubber bands, kitchen twist ties, cable ties or resignation to the problem by throwing leaders into a bucket to be sorted out later.

I keep my leaders looped using the plastic spiral wrap designed to gather electrical wiring into manageable bundles. You can find it in most marine supply stores, commonly sold in 10-foot sections. Choose the black wrap (rather than clear) because it contains UV inhibitors. The 1/4-inch diameter works well on leaders made from under-500-pound mono. Cut the material into 4-inch sections and wrap them around your coiled mono to tame those leaders without slipping or melting in the sun.
