Owning a 20-foot center-console boat has always presented storage problems for me. After a year or so of looking under my console and seeing total disarray - as though someone had thrown in a grenade and shut the door - I decided to do something. My SBSS (small-boat storage solution) relies on eight fairly watertight, plastic ammunition boxes, available at most sporting-goods outlets for about $6 each. I found the boxes easy to label with a typewriter white-out pen.
The safety items - flares, first-aid kit, etc. - can be stored for quick access on top of the stacked boxes. Tools, rum and other not-quite-so-essential items can be stored at the bottom. I can find everything with a quick glance, and the wrenches, peanut-butter crackers and bandages stay clean and dry. It's now a pleasure to open the center console!
