Like many offshore anglers, Capt. Dave Kostyo of Miami keeps a couple of rods armed and ready to catch bait with sabiki rigs. It's easier to put the "sabiki rods" out of the way than to take off the rigs and find some way to store them. Storing them means when you need them you must unwrap the tiny hooks without tangling them, and you're usually in a hurry. On the other hand, if you choose to leave them on the rod, there's nothing nastier than those little gold hooks whipping around in the wind just waiting to snag the first piece of clothing or, worse, body part they can sink their barbs into.
Kostyo (skipper of Knot Nancy, 305-620-5896) has come up with one of those so-simple-I-can't-believe-I-never-thought-of-it ways to keep sabiki hooks out of (your) harm's way: Hook 'em together. If your rig has an even number of hooks, great; if an odd number, run the top or bottom hook through the nearby swivel. Then no hooks are left dangling loose to get into mischief.
