Rigs and Tips: Fly Reel Anchor

Rigs and Tips: Fly Reel Anchor

To better anchor backing to a fly reel with a ported spool, tie the line to the center of the spool by looping it through two of the holes. To start, bend a 4- to 5-inch piece of thin wire, forming a loop at the bottom. Bend the loop at a 45-degree angle and thread it through one of the holes. Slide it in until the loop is centered under a second hole just above or below the first hole. Slip the end of the backing through the second hole and through the loop of wire. Slide the wire up and out the first hole. Double knot the backing and spool the line.
