I never throw anything away. After I inadvertently cut too much off of the skirt on a big Ilander Sea Searcher, I threw the plain head into my box thinking I might find a way to put some skirts back on it. While I never managed to get any skirt material to stay on it, I did find that it worked fine without any hair or plastic skirts at all.
Since a lot of folks use this lure in combination with a dead Spanish mackerel, I thought the head alone should work just fine ? and I was right!
The head comes apart in two pieces, and the piece with the eyeballs on it accommodates the head of a rigged Spanish mackerel perfectly. This setup works flawlessly on flat-calm days, adding an extra bit of splash and smoke to your skipping mackerel baits. It should also provide a better hookup ratio since you don't have to worry about the hook getting tangled up or blocked by a skirt.
You can also use the smaller section of the shiny chrome head to run in front of a ballyhoo or strip bait. It adds plenty of flash and should get a few extra miles out of your baits.
