You want to set the drag on your offshore reels or weigh a trophy catch and release it. But when you find your tube scale, its springs have rusted and you're out of luck.
Here's how to keep your next, new scale in perfect condition - build a miniature PVC "rod tube" for it. Get a 13-inch length of 2-inch-diameter PVC pipe, two joints, a flat-head screw top and a round-head end-piece. Glue the joints to the pipe with PVC glue. When dry, attach the rounded bottom piece to one end and screw the flat lid into the threaded joint at the top.
Wrap your scale in a piece of terry cloth or flannel saturated with WD-40 and keep it in your new, waterproof scale holder. Re-spray with WD-40 from time to time and your rust problems will be over.
