While most anglers in the Central California area prefer to fish salmon on 12-pound, for the past five years I've been using 4-pound to add a little excitement and sport to my fishing. I started out using a standard mooching sinker on a plastic slider rig, but I found that the plastic slider chafed the 4-pound. In order to get around this chaffing problem, I attach a 15-inch leader of 30-pound to my main line with a barrel swivel and slide on a 3- to 6-ounce egg sinker. A snap swivel completes the chafing gear portion, and I finish off the rig with a 15-foot section of 20-pound leader looped on the snap and tied to a barbless 7/0 hook.
Using the egg sinker gives me better control, and the line doesn't get wrapped up around the plastic slider and mooching sinker rig. So far, I've been able to land salmon up to 17 pounds on this rig.
