I like to chase a wide variety of fish, pursuing sheepshead and flounder in the Indian River Lagoon with the same zeal as I do big marlin offshore. One of the tricks I use when flounder fishing involves putting the oval weights in a vise and flattening them to keep them from rolling along the bottom.
Recently, while fishing in a sailfish tournament, I found that I had mistakenly brought all of my flattened weights instead of the regular round ones I usually use when rigging my circle-hook ballyhoo. My initial dismay turned into a eureka moment when I found that the flattened weights fit into the gill plates of the dink ballyhoo much easier. I could close the gills up tightly when using the flattened weights, and they created a much smaller profile when stuffed up inside the cavity.
