For some time the majority of saltwater fishermen have chosen the excellent reliability and toughness that comes with using star-drag reels from Penn. Then along came Shimano with its popular waterproof drag washers. Now several aftermarket companies are making waterproof drag washers for Penn reels. However, it's not necessary to go to an expensive drag supplier to get waterproof brakes for your star-drag reels.
I've found that a combination of Shimano grease and original Penn washers creates a super-smooth waterproof drag. It sounds odd, but this solution greatly improves the drag's performance and weatherproofs the drag washers at the same time. The drag stays smooth at any tension and will not overheat.
