A lure should closely imitate baitfish in the area, but it should also stand out in some small way in order to draw attention to itself and invite further investigation from predators. Soft-plastic baits are effective shallow-water artificials that mimic the size and texture of baitfish or other prey.

Give a chartreuse bait an orange-tipped tail or add contrasting colors such as red to the head of a white lure - the possibilities are endless.
