Backing Under Tension

Use a second reel to create line tension when loading fly line onto your reel.

One of the problems of using Dacron, Micron or gel-spun line as a fly-line backing is getting the line on the reel tight. To solve this problem, I wind the backing on a 12/0 Penn Senator prior to putting it on the fly reel. I found that I can put 400 yards or more of backing on top of a fully spooled 12/0 reel. To load the fly reel tightly, I simply set the drag on the 12/0 and wind the backing onto the fly reel under pressure.
