Supercomputer Proves Fish Flight Mechanism is Perfect

The actions of prey species might help produce better energy devices

When small fish dart away from predators, they first coil their bodies into a C shape. That specific movement helps them propel as far as possible from larger fish, according to an article on the technology news web site phys.org.

While scientists have apparently long suggested that this C-start existed, it has now been proven by a supercomputer. Using sophisticated algorithms and calculations, the supercomputer reproduced the behavior of a prey fish. The results showed that the fish’s escape strategy is perfectly optimized.

“The fish use their entire body to escape (by means of the C-start), so that they can displace much larger volumes of water, to accelerating themselves,” the article states.

The scientists hope that understanding such biological concepts might help apply them to physical systems such as wind turbines and other devices that generate energy.
