Q: Last July, my friends and I went fishing out of Ocean City, and my friend Troy caught a remora 33 3/4 inches long. I was wondering if this is a possible record? If not, what is the record? - Phil Bunting, Ocean City, Maryland
A: It may be. According to the International Game Fish Association, which keeps all-tackle world records for the sharksucker (Echeneis naucrates), the largest species of remora, that fish reaches at least 43 inches in length. However, the existing all-tackle-record sharksucker, caught off Papua New Guinea, was only 29 1/2 inches long - and weighed only 5 pounds, 1 ounce.
Besides sharksuckers, seven other species of remoras live along the eastern U.S., but none of the others is known to grow to more than 30 inches. So, no matter which species you caught, it might have been a record fish.
