Giant Worms Revisited

Is it safe to eat wahoo that have stomach worms?

Q: I too have caught wahoo with worms in their stomachs. Could you tell me whether it's safe to eat a wahoo with this condition? - Dennis Shaw, Summerland Key, Florida

A: Yes, it's generally safe to eat the flesh of a fish with parasitic worms in its stomach. Adult-stage worms such as these don't usually affect humans directly. Most fish parasites are very specific to the hosts they require to live and reproduce. However, some fish parasites can infect humans, so all seafood should be cooked thoroughly before eating, just to be on the safe side.
