12 Crystal-Clear Raymarine Chirp Sonar Snapshots Deciphered

Bait balls, striped bass and mackerel — all in high-definition color.

Capt. Terry Nugent of Riptide Charters out of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, captured a series of remarkable screen shots, using his Raymarine CP570 chirp sonar module with an Airmar R599 transducer, CP100 chirp module and Raymarine’s DownVision.

Nugent, a longtime New England charter guide and angler, captioned each image with a description of the bait and predators, based on his experience. One image features large sandeels being eaten by mackerel, with a school of large striped bass waiting on the dropoff. The Chirp unit’s high-definition target separation even shows — in one image — a striped bass inside a bait ball.

Several large striped bass feeding on 3 small and 1 large school of mackerel. A small school of sandeels is on the bottom. Notice how the mackerel are not shown as a single large mass, but as a school of small individuals. The separation the sounder has is incredible. Courtesy Capt. Terry Nugent

Several striped bass feeding on a big ball of mackerel. Notice the striper in the middle of the bait ball. The CP570/R599 CHIRP sounder clearly shows the bass as a separate target in the tight mass of bait. There is another smaller bait ball to the right. Courtesy Capt. Terry Nugent
