Chris Newport, of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., USA may be the first to enter his name in the currently vacant men's 24 kg (50 lb) line class slot of the IGFA World Record Game Fishes book after catching a 25.74 kg (56 lb 12 oz) black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci). The species, added in late 2007 for men's and women's line class, fly and juniors records is beginning to fill up with record holders. Newport was guided by Joe Verdino, Dec. 19 using pinfish for bait while fishing the Gulf of Mexico.
