The 2006 Custom Shoot-Out was held May 10-13, 2006 in Harbour Island, Bahamas. Thirty-two custom built sportfishing boats entered teams in the 5th annual fund-raising tournament. Twenty-one custom boat builders were represented including Rybovich(5), Merritt(4), Jim Smith(3), American(2), Bayliss(2), Tribute, Weaver, Garlington, Mark Willis, Hines-Farley, Whiticar, Sonny Briggs, Donzi, F&S, A. Willis, Hunley-Sullivan, Jarrett Bay, Gamefisherman, Shearline, C&S and Spencer.
There were 39 billfish released (16 blue marlin, 17 white marlin, and 6 sailfish) during the three days of fishing. WAVE PAVER (61f Garlington), owned by JR DAVIS of Kissimmiee, FL, released 2 Blue Marlin, 2 White Marlin, and 1 Sailfish (which included 500 bonus points for a tournament grand slam) to capture the overall title in the 2006 Custom Shoot-Out. At the end of the fishing on Saturday, three boats lined up in the 1-3 foot seas for the "Fastest Custom Boat Race". DOUBLE DOG, winner of the previous 3 yearsf races, was finally beaten by the JACK O HEARTS with owner JACK DELL. There was only one other boat brave enough to race these two boats, the BLANK CHECK. JACK O HEARTS, with their new MAN engines, sped past the other two boats in excess of 47 knots, and was crowned "2006's Fastest Custom Boat". At the dock, owner JACK DELL of the JACK O HEARTS went over to DON McKINNEY of the DOUBLE DOG and said "the conditions were just right for us and if is was rough, that Hines Farley would be the boat to beat."
Everyone attending the tournament events had a great time. Harbour Island offers shopping, great dining, and a fun place to explore or relax on the world famous "pink sand" beaches. Florida Detroit Diesel, Rupp Marine, and Ring Power-CAT were Platinum Sponsors for the tournament. Other major sponsors present were Treasure Coast Propellers, Phasor Marine, Marine Exhaust Systems, Awlgrip, The Marine Group, Smith-Merritt Insurance, Quay Marine Insurance, RJ Boyle, The Billfish Foundation and many others who offered financial support for the tournament. Among the custom builders supporting the tournament were Roy Merritt of Merritt Boat & Engine Works, Michael Rybovich and Wayne Huizenga Jr. of Rybovich, Jim Weaver of Weaver Boatworks, Rich Scheffer of Tribute Performance Boats, John Whiticar of Whiticar Boatworks, Peter Landeweer of Garlington-Landeweer Marine, Dominick LaCombe Jr. of American Custom Yachts, Mark Willis of Mark Willis Boats, Steve Roy of R&R/Conch Boatworks, Jim Floyd of F&S Boat Works, Bob Roscioli of Donzi and John Meyer of L&H. According to Skip Smith, the Tournament Director, "the tournament was a tremendous success with great weather, good fishing, lots of fun, all to benefit (over $100,000 was raised) Breast Cancer Research.
At the awards dinner and banquet, Skip Smith, Bill Snyder and RJ Boyle gave commemorative plaques to each tournament sponsor in recognition for their support of the tournament. The WAVE PAVER team, Jr Davis, Captain Jeff Babuschak, Harry "Snick" Akers, Scott Glasscock, accepted the 1ST Place trophy, a framed custom original by marine artist RJ BOYLE, along with many other fine gifts. CUTNAIL, a 58 ft MERRITT, with Captain BOBBY BROWN placed second with 1 Blue Marlin and 3 White Marlin. BLANK CHECK, a 60ft WEAVER and Captain DANNY HEARNS took third place, with two Blue Marlin and a Sailfish release. JR DAVIS, owner of WAVE PAVER, won the "Top Angler" trophy with his two Blue Marlin, two White Marlin, and one Sailfish releases. Jr Davis also tagged all his fish earning him even more prizes from The Billfish Foundation. ROY MERRITT of MERRITT BOAT & ENGINE, winner of the 2005 Custom Shoot-Out Trophy, passed on the perpetual "Custom Shoot-Out Trophy", a beautiful custom Carey Chen glass sculpture, to JR DAVIS of WAVE PAVER and PETER LANDAWEER of GARLINGTON for display in their office for the current year.
