The Spanish team on Pilar, including Sergio Gonzalez Arcis, Santiago Alvarez Trujillo, Jose L. Conde Alvarez, Felix L. Alvarez Tinguillo and Boris Marcelo Bartulin, released the first marlin of the 60th Ernest Hemingway International Billfish Fishing Tournament and went on to win top overall honors.
Pilar tagged and released a blue on Day One to start the tournament. A Russian team on DC 9-III released a white marlin to get on the board. On Day Two, the team from Denmark released a blue marlin on Marlin XVIII. A team from Argentina released a white on Day Three, followed by the Americans with a blue. Pilar managed to hang on to first place but had a few scares. The Ecuador team on Tag and Release scored a white marlin and hooked another one just before lines out. The Ecuadorian team released the marlin but never got a release photo, which meant no points and Pilar kept its top spot. The Russian team on DC-9-III won second place, followed by the Danish team on Marlin XVIII.
