Women are to pit their angling expertise and tenacity against tarpon at the 32nd annual Women's Spring Tarpon Fly Tournament set for Tuesday through Friday, June 10-13.
A kick-off party and rules meeting are to be held Tuesday, June 11, at the Lorelei, mile marker 82 bayside in Islamorada. Fly-fishing for tarpon is slated Wednesday through Friday sandwiched between daily breakfast at 5 a.m. and cocktail parties at 3 p.m. at the Lorelei.
The all-release, fly-only tournament requires anglers to use a tournament-supplied 16-pound tippet. Scoring is based on the total number of releases, so anglers must hook, fight and release tarpon as quickly as possible -- making the competition a true test of skill and endurance.
Fish must measure a minimum of 48 inches long to be counted for scoring.
Entry fee is $600 and covers all social functions for each angler and her guide.
The awards banquet is set for 5 p.m. Friday, June 13, at the Islamorada Fishing Club adjacent to the Lorelei.
