Fishing aboard Capt. Mark Wodlinger's 33-foot Contender center console and using Daiwa tackle, team Catch One captured first place honors and a cash prize of $100,000 in the inaugural Sailfish Cup tournament held Nov. 12-14 in Miami.
The Catch One team – consisting of Wodlinger, Capt. Matt Alligood, Trent Rogers, Dave Kairalla and Chris Black – leadered a total of 14 sailfish over the course of the tournament to narrowly beat out second place finisher, Reely Tight, for the prestigious win. Alligood skippered Catch One to waters off the Palm Beach County Coast, where the team landed eight sails on the first day of competition and six sails on day two.
According to Rogers, while most of the 44 boats fishing in the tournament opted to head south out of Miami, Catch One ran about 50 miles north. "We experienced success in that area both days, fishing goggle-eyes and threadfin herring on kite rigs and free-lines in about 100 to 125 feet of water," Rogers said. "The tackle we used – including Daiwa Saltiga spinning reels, Saltist STT50H high-speed conventionals and Tanacom Bull Power Assist reels for the kites – performed flawlessly, allowing us to leader every sail we hooked. Making the most of our opportunities – not losing a single fish – turned out to be the difference in our winning this highly competitive event." |
