Anglers who love to fish for tuna and want to enjoy some of the best tuna fishing on the West coast can head to the 17th Annual Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge September 29-30, 2007. The event, hosted by Silver Gate Yacht Club, benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego, a charitable non-profit organization whose purpose is to grant wishes to children who have been diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. San Diego County Credit Union is the title sponsor, and the presenting sponsor is the Southern California Tribal Nations.
Since 1991, the Tuna Challenge has grown to be the largest tuna fishing tournament in the continental United States. Make-A-Wish's largest fundraiser - the Tuna Challenge - will help to fund 25% of the wishes this year. Since 1994 the Tuna Challenge has raised over $1,150,000 for the San Diego Chapter.
The main event for this annual charity tournament, which attracted over 600 anglers and raised $301,000 last year, begins at 5 a.m. Saturday, September 29, 2007 at the Silver Gate Yacht Club, 2091 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego, CA. This year, top angler awards include multi-day fishing trips to Alaska and Mexico, fishing gear, boat equipment, art and jewelry. On top of those great prizes, all anglers and non-anglers are invited to participate in the Tuna Challenge Boat Raffle. Tickets are now on sale for a (1st Prize) 18-foot Parker boat valued at over $40,000 and a (2nd Prize) 11-foot Zodiac boat valued at $9,000.
All anglers signed up, paid in full, and postmarked before the deadline of July 16th are eligible to win a $1,000 shopping spree at Angler's Choice superstore.
"With over $100,000 in prizes and anglers bag, the Tuna Challenge (uniquely) gives anglers more opportunities to win than any other tournament of its kind," said Tom Drake, a seasoned fisherman and chairman of the Tuna Challenge. "And the early bird prize of a $1,000 shopping spree means a lot of anglers will want to save July 16th on their calendars."
