New initiative seeks gamefish status for Georgia's redfish

Approximately 30 freshwater species are protected under Georgia law per gamefish status, but not the first saltwater species.

A new grassroots initiative has been launched to win gamefish status for Red Drum in the state of Georgia. This long overdue measure seeks the Georgia General Assembly to recognize the ecological and economic importance of the State's official saltwater fish by granting the Red Drum the protection it rightly deserves.

Approximately 30 freshwater species are protected under Georgia law per gamefish status, but not the first saltwater species, despite the fact that the relatively small Georgia coastline accounts for approximately 1/3 of the saltwater marsh habitat on the east coast.

You can read more about the initiative in this article that appeared in the Augusta Chronicle
