Jose Wejebe Dies in Plane Crash

The popular 'Spanish Fly' host was killed in the single-engine plane crash on Friday.

We are saddened to confirm reports that popular angler and 'Spanish Fly' host Jose Wejebe died yesterday afternoon in a plane crash in southwest Florida. He was 54.

According to reports, Wejebe was flying a single-engine Comp Air 8 kit plane when it crashed soon after takeoff from Everglades City around 4:45 p.m.

"Everything Jose did, he did well," said John Brownlee, editor in chief of Salt Water Sportsman, "whether guiding, or starring in his award-winning TV show. He touched a lot of people's lives and elevated our sport far beyond where it was only a few years past. He will be missed by a great many people, for a great many different reasons."

Cuban-born Wejebe was a colorful and popular personality in the fishing community and host of the long-running 'Spanish Fy' fishing show, which has been on the air since 1995.

He is leaving behind 28-year-old daughter Kristin Wejebe.

Please join us in offering our condolences to Jose's family and fellow friends.

I guess I'm the last to hear such sad news. I just got back from Afghanistan and I was fishing a beautiful flat near Rockport,Tx. and I told my buddy one day I will throw a cast net like Jose Wejebe. He said you know he died right?
I didn't know, my trip fishing was done for the day. He was the one I truely
looked up to, because of his conservation and passion for the sport. Three monthes later I find out I've lost my hero. I always wanted to fish with him. Rest in peace Bro.

It is with a heavy heart I say good bye to an icon. Jose had so much influence with my decision to give up fresh water fishing and venture into becoming a salt water fly fisherman. My son and I would wake up on Saturday mornings to watch his show, Spanish Fly. The production of these episodes were so far above any of the other shows. He had such class with how he handled himself and the choice of background music was always enjoyable.

One of my personal goals was to return to Key West and charter a trip on he Spanish Fly. My goal will have to wait.
Jose you were a great influence and an even better person. I did not have the opportunity to meet you but watching you every Saturday I felt I got to know you.

RIP, my Friend.

From the days of Walkers Cay Chronicle's I remember watching and felt a true inspiration. I picked up a fly rod and started fishing. It's amazing when one can show genuine passion for something and inspire a generation to follow. I feel as though I had a chance to know a great man, sad I could never shake his hand and say thank you. I learned so much about fishing and the value of life from Jose. He will be missed my sincerest wishes for his family and those who actually knew him. Peace Bro

When I saw the words Spanish Fly on my TV Guide, I know that show was going to have excitement, suspense and I was going to get some knowledge from the fishing show. I have watched the show for more than ten years now, and I am very sad to see such a talented Gentleman endure a untimely demise. Jose, we will miss you.

Like almost every Saturday morning I woke up, made my coffee, sat in my chair, and turned on the out door channel. That's when I saw the news that Jose had passed. Right away I looked on the computer to see what happened. I am not an avid saltwater fisherman, in fact the only saltwater fishing I do is for flounder once maybe twice a year, but I always loved watching Jose's shows. There was just something about his shows that kept my attention and just kept me coming back. It was not only his expertise, personality, demeanor, and passion, but theI way he transfered that to you through his show and made you feel like you were right there on the boat with him. He truly had a gift!! He will be greatly missed by all, even by us guys who only got our saltwater fix through his show. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jose and all his family and friends!! God bless!

This is an incredible shock to me personally. The Spanish Fly has always been my way of escaping back into my true calling in life. Though I am a Michigan native, my heart and soul belong on the flats in the salt air. Serious and novice anglers alike will all suffer from this loss. His soul always seemed to be guided by the hero of all true salt water fishermen, Earnest Hemmingway, and Jose seemed to live by those rules. Although I was not lucky enough to know him personally, judging from his candor and deneanor, he seemed to be well like by all who knew him. I will certainly miss Jose's enthusiastic presentation his of fishing techniques, the surreal settings exemplified in his adventures and the comradery shared by all who fished with him. God bless you, Jose, and your family and friends who hurt due to your abrupt and unexpexted departure.

As a dad! I loved watching you with your daughter on a recent episode. I grew up with memories of fishing with my dad and when I had twin girls I hesitated to fully understand what all I could teach them. Thank you for your spirit and the two lessons I learned watching your show. Fish with my girls and teach them the same love and passion you shared not just fishing, but being together. Lastly, take the fishing trip I've been delaying with my dad (now 60) to just say "thanks dad". Loved your show and your viewers wish you and your family vivid memories of time spent together!

Watched Flip and your show for many years in NY. Missed you once at a fishing expo. Always wanted to fish with, and never had the opportunity. Moved to Florida and bought me a boat, because of your show. Every time my rod bends, it will be in your memory my brother. The fishing community around the world is hurting. You truly made a difference to all us fisherman. Puerto Rico loves you...

We just lost the Cal Ripken of our sport! Just watching his show I learned how to light leader and live bait a bad day into a great one. And who else would release a giant wahoo or big tuna? He would. And thanks to him, many more of us do then ever before. The passion he had and the way he presented this sport is inspiring, and we, as anglers, should continue to share our experiences and knowledge and watch this sport prosper, and maybe, watch our beloved resource do the same. Farewell Jose, see ya on the water.
