After a direct hit and severe pounding by the wind and rain of slow-moving Hurricane Wilma, the island of Isla Mujeres in Mexico is rapidly undergoing repairs and renovations. So fast in fact, that the island had its electric power restored several days before that in my own home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
This Herculean effort was helped along by the big guy himself, Mexico's President Vincente Fox. President Fox and his entourage personally toured and stayed the night on Isla just a week after the storm and promised to get the largely tourism-based island up and running quickly. This is one fine example of a government official backing up his talk with action. Within days, crews and generators arrived; now the island's biggest complaint is that airlines aren't running enough flights to bring in the visiting tourists. Capt. Anthony Mendillo of Kin M Charters (firstname.lastname@example.org) says the island's sport-fishing community and infrastructure is on track to be completely restored no later than mid December - well ahead of the traditional influx of transient boats and swarms of hungry sailfish in late January. Mendillo has personally toured both Puerto Isla Mujeres and Enrique Lima's marina, and reports both facilities will be ready for the fishing fleet. Local hotels have already recovered phone, fax and internet services. All stand ready for occupancy and are taking reservations.
See you in paradise!
