For three days, stouthearted anglers are to challenge the leaping, thrashing, long-running tarpon of the Keys with the flimsiest of tools -- the fly rod.

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys -- For three days, stouthearted anglers are to challenge the leaping, thrashing, long-running tarpon of the Keys with the flimsiest of tools -- the fly rod.

The Golden Fly Invitational Tarpon Tournament, presented by Outback Steakhouse, is to kick off with a rules meeting and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the Lorelei, mile marker (MM) 82 bayside in Islamorada.

Three days of fishing are to follow, each day beginning at the crack of dawn with lines in at 6 a.m. Nine hours later, anglers are scheduled to end their day's fishing.

The all-release tournament is for fly rods only. Tippet, which may not exceed 20-pound test, is to be furnished at no charge by tournament officials. Only artificial lures (flies) may be used, with no bait or chumming.

Tarpon must measure at least 48 inches long to count as a release. Weight-fish entries are to be measured with tournament-supplied measuring straps.

A total of five weight fish may be entered by each angler during the tournament. The fish can be caught on any day, in any number, up to the total allowed. Cameras are to be supplied so anglers can photograph their fish.

Breakfast is to be served at the Lorelei on each fishing day. An awards banquet is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at the Outback Steakhouse, MM 80 oceanside in Islamorada.

Entry fee is $1,000 per angler.
