Federal Fishery Councils Join to Discuss South Florida Issues

Combined committee to host webinar later this month

The two federal fishery councils that manage South Florida offshore waters — the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council — have formed a joint panel to address issues specific to this highly prized angling region. The first meeting for this panel is scheduled as a webinar open to all from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25.

The group will talk about its purpose and will look at specific fisheries issues such as:

  • yellowtail and mutton snapper management
  • commercial grouper harvest in Monroe County (Florida Keys)
  • allocations of fisheries landings in Monroe County (Florida Keys)
  • the possibility of establishing a special-management unit that allows for consistent state/federal fishery regulations across South Florida

To register for the webinar, you can visit (now or later) https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/323435202. To contact the South Atlantic council, call 866.SAFMC-10 or visit safmc.net. To contact the Gulf council, call 888-833-1844 or visit gulfcouncil.org.
