‘Celebration of Life’ held for Jose Wejebe at IGFA

Many offer memories of the popular TV host

Family, friends and colleagues of Jose Wejebe filled the room at a “Celebration of Life” memorial service held Sunday at IGFA headquarters in Dania Beach, Florida. The popular ‘Spanish Fly’ host was well-remembered for his expertise, colorful personality and charitable nature.

Wejebe died in a single-engine plane crash in southwest Florida on April 6. He was 54.

Steve Waters of the Sun Sentinel reported from Sunday’s event and talked with those who were close to Wejebe.

Last week, we also heard from Wejebe’s colleagues on the Hell’s Bay pro team — including Chico Fernandez, Flip Pallot and Hell’s Bay president Chris Peterson — who had many kind words regarding his substantial influence on the fishing world.

Many of our own readers have also posted comments remembering Wejebe.  You can read them at the bottom of the page here or leave one of your own.

I am saddened by this loss to the sport fishing world!! I remember when Jose Wejebe first came onto the TV show and started to introduce us all to the world of saltwater fishing!! The fun, excitement and knowledge about how to fish these waters and the joy and respect he shared with us all brought joy to his heart as well as those who watched each week on the TV!! Thank You Jose Wejebe, for all you did for us all around the world!!

I truly appreciated the way Jose express his love for the sport of fishing. You and the knowledge that you've shared will not be forgotten. Thank you and God bless you Jose. capt. Jaime (Reel FantaSeas II)

I grew up in the Florida Keys and move away as a young adult to attend college on the west coast. I visited the Keys often but my greatest "connection" to home was watching Jose on his informative, friendly and well produced television show Spanish Fly. I admired his sense of adventure which clearly showed through in each wonderful episode I had the immense enjoyment of watching. As a single father of an aspiring angler daughter of 12, I was most moved by Jose's episode where he spent the day fishing with his daughter. I will never forget that episode nor will I forget the lessons and enjoyment this man, whom I only met once at a Boat Show last year, brought to my weekend mornings otherwise wishing I could live and fish the Florida Keys. A true loss to our industry. My thoughts and prayers go out to his immediate and very large extended family.
