CCA Alert: Fishing moratorium being considered in Biscayne Fisheries Management Plan

Fishing moratorium being considered in Biscayne Fisheries Management Plan

Biscayne National Park (BNP) is trying to implement fishing closures along with shutting down all lobstering in the park. Over five years ago a BNP working group was formed with a diverse membership of stakeholders, including commercial and recreational fishers, divers, scientists and representatives of environmental groups. This group put together and presented recommendations for the BNP which were ignored. Now the BNP would like to go back and try for a fishing moratorium in the park.

CCA Recommendations:

Biscayne National Park should implement their working group's recommendations which did not include marine reserve areas or a fishing moratorium.

CCA will fight to protect access for recreational fishermen to all public fishing areas unless there is a clear indication that recreational fishermen are the cause of a specific conservation problem and that less severe conservation measures, such as gear restrictions, possession limits, size restriction, quotas, or closed seasons will not adequately address the targeted conservation problem.

YOU ARE STRONGLY URGED TO ATTEND ONE OR ALL OF THE UPCOMING MEETINGS THAT WILL BE HELD BY BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK!

Meetings will start at 6 p.m. and will last till 9 p.m.
