CANCUN, Mexico (May 21st, 2010) - The Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) announced the inauguration of the 1st Puerto Morelos Sport Fishing Tournament "Don Andres Garcia Lavin", from May 28th through the 30th, coinciding with celebrations of the "Día de la Marina" (Navy Day). The tournament, which has actually been celebrated for 21 years in Puerto Morelos will now officially, be named after a local business man.
Awards will go to those participants who capture the highest scoring species of Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, Barracuda, Sierra and Bonito. In accordance with Federal fishing regulations and to protect the billfish of the Caribbean, only one billfish can be captured per species, per boat, per day; the Sailfish is excluded from the tournament. The awarding prize money will be over $23,000 dollars.
The fishing tournament is judged by the National Sport Fishing Federation. The first 10 places will move on to participate in the Final Regional Golf-Caribbean Zone, which integrates the National Fishing Championship, in which the winner will receive their ticket to the World fishing tournament in Italy.
Puerto Morelos, located about 20 miles away from Cancun, will celebrate this fishing tournament which will gather competitors from different areas of the southeastern region of the country, as well as a large number of visitors who are attracted by the beauty of the location and competitive nature of the sport.
A welcome cocktail for participants will take place on Friday, May 28th in the evening. The tournament will promptly begin on Saturday, May 29th at 8:00 am and boats will return at 5:00 pm to weigh in the catches of the day, followed by an evening of dancing in Puerto Morelos' central park. On Sunday, May 30th participating boats will depart at 8:00 am and return at 2:00 pm and the awards ceremony will take place on at 4:00 pm.
