The Billfish Tournament Series of Central America was recently formed to incorporate several of the high-profile billfish events in Central America, with the following goals:
- Promote sportfishing tourism as an important and sustainable industry throughout the Central American Pacific Coast region where the events take place.
- Promote the conservation, research and sound management practices for all species of billfish including blue, black and striped marlin and sailfish as well as pelagic gamefish to both enhance and protect the future of the sportfishing tourism industry.
- Increase and enhance the levels of communication and cooperation among the tournament directors and host resorts in the region.
The Billfish Tournament Series of Central America will consist of a year-long point race by Team/Boat which will result in an overall Series Champion. Points will be awarded by billfish release (marlin and sailfish) during participating tournaments using their event catch logs. The winning team will have their names inscribed upon the BTSCA Perpetual Trophy, which will reside at their home marina until the awards presentation for the following year. There is absolutely no additional cost for a team to participate in the Billfish Tournament Series of Central America as well.
Participating tournaments in the 2013 BTS will be the Quepos Billfish Cup, Feb. 6-9; Presidential Challenge of Costa Rica (Carrillo), Feb. 28-March 3; Presidential Papagayo Cup (Marina Papagayo), May 16-19; Flor de Cana International, August 15-18, 2013; El Salvador International, Oct. 31-Nov. 3; Presidential Challenge of Guatemala, November 22-24, 2013.
