Adaptable for small boats and kayaks, Torqeedo's new Travel 503 and 1003 electric outboards compare to 1.5 and 3 hp gasoline engines with regard to power, the company says. The integrated lithium-manganese batteries store lots of energy per pound of battery weight. At slow speed, the Travel motors' range exceeds 13 miles. To help power the motors in a green way, Torqeedo offers optional 3-foot solar panels. A display inside the tiller shows range, speed, power consumption and charge information; speed and range come from an internal GPS. When the battery charge drops below 30 percent, the motors emit a sound alert. The 503 weighs 28 pounds and will power a vessel up to 1,650 pounds; the 1003 weighs 291/2 pounds and powers a boat up to 3,000 pounds. The 503 costs $1,599, and the 1003 costs $1,899.
