SPOT combined its satellite-based messaging and emergency features with a vessel-security system in a new device called HUG. HUG alerts a monitoring center with the boat's location if it detects unauthorized movement. HUG includes a waterproof tracker with built-in GPS and transmitter, a wireless keypad and two key fobs; all communicate wirelessly and operate with a 12- or 24-volt external battery or solely using AA lithium batteries. The sensor alert also monitors potential problems such as high bilge water or low battery, and detects a door ajar or smoke. HUG costs $449.95 plus an annual subscription, which starts at $149.99.
